Warnings From a Medical Scientist

Go read this, The “Herd Mentality” is Not a Public Health Strategy, and follow the links especially this one: Former Stanford colleagues warn Dr. Scott Atlas fosters ‘falsehoods and misrepresentations of science’.

Shopping for a Quack Doctor when you don’t like the diagnosis from multiple other doctors with actual expertise in the particular field of medicine is a sure way to increase the chance of death. Doing this for a whole country during a deadly pandemic like Trump has done ensures many thousands on up to millions of unnecessary deaths. Trump is already responsible for thousands, to tens of thousands, of unnecessary deaths, and based on his actions it seems he wants that number to become millions.

Pay Attention to Dr. Gorski and Other Science Based Doctors If You Want the Best Chance of Surviving This Pandemic

As I’ve pointed out before, the entire saga shows that, when push comes to shove and a crisis hits, physicians’ dedication to science- and evidence-based medicine is disturbingly weak. So it came as no surprise (to me, at least) when the FDA issued a warning on Friday about chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine:

“The Food and Drug Administration warned consumers Friday against taking malaria drugs chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine to treat Covid-19 outside a hospital or formal clinical trial setting after deaths and poisonings were reported. …”

One thing is very clear, Dr. Didier Raoult, and David L Brown M.D. should have their licenses to practice medicine revoked, like what happened to former doctor Andrew Wakefield.

My First Earthquake

I felt my first earthquake a few minutes ago, It was this one from the USGS site, centered in southern Maine. The house shook for a few seconds and nothing fell over but I must admit I was concerned enough that I headed down from the open plan second floor to shelter in a doorway. By the time I got down the stairs the shaking had stopped.

Happy World Metrology Day

WMD_2010_smallToday is the 4th annual World Metrology Day sponsored by the Bureau international des poids et mesures (BIPM, International Bureau of Weights and Measures) and Organisation Internationale de Métrologie Légale (OIML, International Organization of Legal Metrology).

From the press release:

As the world strives to move on from its recent financial problems, and as Governments work to regenerate economies, we shall find that science and technology are the engines of economic growth and prosperity. These, in turn, rely on being able to measure correctly and to refer measurements to the same international reference standards. A world without accurate measurement is a world where science, technology, trade and society can’t communicate and where error and uncertainty would reign supreme.
