Wasting more of my tax dollars

Sadly the NCCAM has requested $122 million for its FY 08 budget and they’ll likely get it. After decades of research and tons of cash spent what do we have to show for it, nothing. Well not exactly nothing we have more studies showing that none of it works better than other placebo effects. When are we going to wake up and smell the coffee, disband the NCCAM and give the money to NIH to help us actually improve health care.

It’s one thing for private individuals in the US to waste their own $40 Billion per year on placebo effects but, it’s totally unfair to spend my tax dollars on studying these bogus treatments. No matter how many CAM studies show there ineffectiveness, people will keep spending their money on quackery. Many of these CAM practices have been shown ineffective for centuries yet people keep buying in do to wishful thinking and deluded or fraudulent practitioners. 😦

Hat tip to Orac for pointing this out this insanity.

Vaccinations in Massachusetts

I don’t often hear about pseudo science in my home state but today there’s a whopper. It is highlighted in this article from BostonNOW Avoiding vaccinations – Parents might be lying to avoid kids getting shots. The article is great and this quote from Pediatrician Dr. John Cohen is spot on with my opinion on the matter.

“You are withholding from them something easily available, well-studied and used for years that is going to prevent their getting an illness, It’s essentially abuse.”

Please, please, please, follow your M.D.’s advice and get your child vaccinated. We do not want to go back to the days before vaccinations when a high percentage of children died every year from diseases we have practically eliminated by vaccinating all children. Keep in mind this isn’t just about protecting individual children. Sometimes a vaccine will not protect an individual but by vaccinating over 90% of a population the diseases can’t easily spread to the ones for whom the vaccine isn’t directly effective. So by not vaccinating your child you are potentially putting other peoples children at risk as well as your own children.

In the comments to the BostonNow article, a man who wants to have you stop using evidence based medicine says.

“Skip your Vaccination! Lie if you have to! …”

“I believe one of the main reasons for the poor health of Bostonians is the immunizations they receive as a child. This major, first, near mandatory, naive step, creates a dependency on the medical establishment for future treatment of chronic diseases which makes them worse, not better. …”

Feel free to contact Mr. Snieckus by telephone, e-mail or letter, to tell him what you think about him, after all he publicly posted his contact information so, he must want to hear from everyone. He thinks the entire medical community is a giant conspiracy to make everyone sick and dependent on the medical community. He thinks we should stop spending money on evidence based medicine and instead give the money to guys like him.

Googling “David Snieckus” I found a letter to the editor of the The Newton TAB by Nigel Foster from a couple years ago.

Letter: Macrobiotics is ‘voodoo by another name’
from Nigel Foster Posted Wednesday, January 19, 2005 at The Newton TAB

I was saddened to learn that Newton policy director Jeremy Solomon and Mayor David Cohen might even “consider” promoting a macrobiotic diet as a way to reduce the city’s health care costs. Perhaps they are unaware that macrobiotic teachings are completely inappropriate as a guide for health policy? To put it bluntly: macrobiotics is an intellectually bankrupt combination of diet plan and cult religion that makes many false medical claims. It is voodoo by another name.

A quick glance through the macrobiotic literature should be enough to dispel any doubts. For example, in his book “Natural Healing through Macrobiotics”, author Michio Kushi claims that people can change their blood type by changing their diet (see page 109). He also claims that “Hemophilia is caused not by heredity but by improper diet.”, while admitting that medical science sees it the other way around (page 108). Other outrageous examples are easy to find in this delusional 200-page work.

Since Michio Kushi founded the Institute where David Snieckus learned about macrobiotics, I suggest that Mr. Solomon and Mayor Cohen exercise great caution when considering Mr. Snieckus’ claims. If Newton wants to lower its health costs it should promote a plan of diet and exercise that has been approved by accredited health professionals, and not by self-styled consultants with a vested financial interest.

Bravo Mr. Foster, thank you for taking a stand for reality based medicine, you know the kind that uses scientifically valid evidence instead of anecdotes about placebo effects.

I suggest that if you want to live a long life you should eat right, exercise more, get routine physical examines and, stay away from the likes of David Snieckus.

Thanks to Orac for pointing me to this story via a Mike the Mad Biologist post.

Ignoring reality and faking the stats

Ed at Dispatches from the Culture Wars posted about a False Comparison of Military Deaths. This was his response to a couple of blog posts that make claims completely failing common sense tests.

The first post is: Active Duty Deaths: Bush vs. Clinton, here’s a quote:

US Military active duty deaths simply have not gone up that much despite the fact that we’ve fought two major wars, liberating two formerly oppressed countries, and have struggled against an active terror insurgency in both countries ever since.

The second one is: US Lost More Soldiers Annually Under Clinton Than in Iraq, I won’t bother with a quote, the title clearly shows the premise. Ed does a good job pointing out the errors using the official D.O.D. statistics .

Wishing a more detailed analysis and wanting to get more practice with the greatly enhanced charting capabilities of Open Office I created a spreadsheet. I put the official data in a sheet and constructed some graphs to see if the data agreed with my common sense gut feeling that there are more military deaths in war time than peace time. Here is the result (click the graph to see the full size image).

mil_deaths_graph1

Looking at this chart there were clearly more deaths in administrations before and after Clinton. In fact the absolute lowest point is the final year of the Clinton administration.

Some commenter’s at the three blog posts thought that if you accounted for the differing sizes of the U.S. Military over time then GW Bush’s time would look better, one commenter even claimed that there was a 50% change in military personnel population. A 50% change in a population would certainly have a large impact on the graph so I investigated. Here’s a chart showing the change in U.S. Military population over time:

mil_deaths_graph3

Clearly the military population has changed over time however, it sure doesn’t look like 50%. In the spreadsheet I calculated the percent reduction from the high in 1986 and the low in 1999 and the drop was 35%. Even though the worst case drop is 35% I felt it could still have a major impact on the previous graph so, I did a variation were the death counts are expressed as the percentage of the total military population. This is the result (click the graph to see the full size image).

mil_deaths_graph2

Accounting for the changing population certainly made a difference in the graph. The pre-Clinton years don’t look so bad but, the post-Clinton years look the same or worse. Of course I doubt any of the people buying into the, all Democrats are bad and all Republicans are good, philosophy will adjust to reality. I still am amazed at how firmly peoples blinders can be set, on an engineering list there’s one guy who blames everything on the Democrats. He claims they are at fault for any and all problems in the U.S. even problems that occurred when they were out of power in all branches of government, sigh. Myself I’m a registered independent, I dislike most politicians of all the political parties because they so often fail to grasp reality. Note: My favorite description of reality:

“Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn’t go away.”

Philip K. Dick, How to Build a Universe That Doesn’t Fall Apart Two Days Later , 1978

You can download the spreadsheet and a PDF of the main spreadsheet data and graphs to review my work.

BTW – Open Office Calc is improved to the point were I think I can finally abandon MS Excel entirely.

DDT update

Bug Girl has another excellent post on the DDT and Malaria control issue. It is written so that even a non-biologist like me can grasp the situation easily. Great job again Bug Girl, I encourage everyone to read it and become informed about this pseudo-controversial issue.

(pseudo-controversial = tiny to no controversy among scientists, yet pushed by conspiracy theorists and politicians)

DDT is not a wonderful chemical and Rachel Carson was NOT Hitler

The number of ridiculous things I encounter on mail lists and web sites is truly astounding. A little over a year ago I first encountered DDT misinformation on an engineering mail list. The misinformation was coming from some of the members who believe in popular conspiracy theories, don’t seem to grasp the basics of science and, generally don’t seem to want to look at evidence before jumping to conclusions. I generally ignore their wacky posts after learning my lesson long ago that I won’t change their minds regardless of how much evidence I present refuting their claims.

Fast forward to this year and I see that the DDT misinformation is proliferating and some people are equating Rachel Carson to Hitler and Stalin. This is way over the top, so I figured I had better start investigating the situation in greater detail. What I’ve found is that there is no logical basis for the allegations. The best places to start researching for yourself are DDT posts at Deltoid (Tim Lambert’s blog) and, DDT Posts at Bug Girl’s Blog. They both link to the allegations and refute them with links to actual evidence.
